Midwest Renewable Energy Association
Located in Custer, nearly everyone around here has heard of the Energy Fair they put on every year around the Summer Solstice. What you may not know is they offer classes and a degree program in collaberation with Madison Area Technical College. Click on the link below for their calendar, as there are too many things for me to be able to post it all here.

Lost Creek Folk School
For the longest time, these guys offered primitive skills training, now run by Greg Weiss, they are also a guide service in the Apostle Islands as well. Here is a copy of the calendar I just received.
Make vs. Buy
Outdoor retail marketing is also based on fantasy. We want the same stuff as the gal who just climbed Everest, or the guy who backpacked across Siberia. We want that adventure in our lives, and being a consumer culture, this is how we try to get it.
But it’s not real. The early mountain climbers wore leather cowboy boots and wool pants, with ropes made from plants. Most of us don’t need any of the high tech gear on the market to have an adventurous and safe outdoor life. Moreover, we don’t LEARN anything from buying this stuff.
There is a saying; The more you know, the less you need. Having the ability to FIND & MAKE what you need to live (and recreate) is a skill that brings new dimensions to your life, and a sense of security you can’t buy from a store. It helps you safeguard your family and friends from disaster, and it’s just plain old FUN in the old fashioned sense of the word.
Luckily there are still people out there teaching the old ways. Jarrod Stone-Dahl is teaching a snowshoe assembly classat Lost Creek January 28-29. This is a great way to learn about wood, lashing, snow, hand-eye coordination, and patience. A bonus with all of these workshops is the people who come together to learn. If you ever feel lost out in the techno-world, you’ll feel at home here…
Also coming soon is a Winter Survival Workshop February 10-12 being taught by long-time woodsman Paul Van Horn. This is not a “what to keep in your trunk” class but a multi-skill foundation to year-round wilderness skills, with a focus on winter.
By becoming more knowledgeable and skilled you’ll be able to share the “real world” with others. See you outside…
